Critical Skills List Drawn Up

February 8, 2022

Department of Home Affairs

The Critical Skills List is in place.

The home affairs department published the List in Government Gazette 45860 in terms of the Immigration Act.

Section 19(4) of the act provides for a critical skills work visa to be issued to foreigners possessing the skills outlined in the List.

Critical skills include programme or project manager; research and development manager; chief information officer; physicist; climate change scientist; chemist; hydrologist; zoologist; civil engineer; mining engineer; quantity surveyor; architect; policy analyst; data scientist; economist and lift mechanic.

According to the department, the List was developed in conjunction with the occupations in high demand and the scarce skills lists compiled by the higher education and training department.

The main objective of the critical skills work visa is to contribute towards the National Infrastructure Project, the Strategic Infrastructure Projects and Key National Strategic Projects.
