The Milk Producers’ Organization (MPO) has requested the continuation of statutory measures in the local milk industry.

The agriculture, land reform and rural development department published the request in Government Gazette 42657.

The statutory measures relate to registrations and the keeping of records and rendering returns.

The current statutory measures in the milk industry will lapse on 1 November 2019.

The MPO has requested ministerial approval for the continuation of the statutory measures for four years until 1 November 2023.

The statutory measure compels milk producers to register with the MPO and provide a statutory mechanism for milk producers to keep records and furnish returns to the MPO.

Each milk producer will be expected, within 15 days after 31 October of each year, to furnish accurate returns to the MPO.

The National Agricultural Marketing Council is currently investigating the request.

Recommendations on the matter will soon be submitted to the minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development.

Comment is invited until 6 September 2019.
