Department of Health

The Council for Medical Schemes seeks comment on proposed levies on medical schemes.

The health department published the call for comment in Government Gazette 44179.

The proposed levies were drawn up in terms of the Council for Medical Schemes Levies Act.

The levies are designed to cover the general regulatory and administrative costs of the Council for Medical Schemes and the function performed by the Registrar of Medical Schemes.

The amount of the proposed levy is based on the Council’s budget and the number of principal members of medical schemes.

The proposed levy for medical schemes for 2021/22 is R42.27 per principal member per year.

Overdue levies will be charged interest at a rate applicable to a debt owing to the state.

Comment on the proposed levies is invited until 12 March 2021.
