CEM on Grades Returning to School

The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) has decided that only Grade 6, Grade 11 and Grade R will return to school on Monday, 6th July 2020.

The basic education department announced this in a statement on amendments to grades returning to school.

According to the department, the decision affects all provinces.

The basic education department recently held a meeting with the CEM.

“The meeting of the Minister, Deputy Minister and all MECs of Education accompanied by Heads of Education Departments, received and considered five reports focusing on key areas in the basic education sector in COVID-19 environment.”

The reports provided a broad review of all the developments relating to the phased approach to the return of learners to school.

The department also announced that other grades will be phased during the month of July in a differentiated approach within the stipulated time frames as per the gazette of 29 June 2020.

The plan is to reach normality by August 2020.

The department recently briefed parliament on the state of readiness on the reopening of schools.

Issues discussed in the briefing include schools which could not re-open, management of COVID-19 cases, management of comorbidities, school hostels, key learning programmes for Grade 12 learners, National School Nutrition Programme, COVID-19 essentials, emergency water supply and update on Directions.
