Department of Justice and Constitutional Development
Amendments to the Legal Aid Manual have been tabled in parliament.
The justice and constitutional development department announced the tabling in Government Gazette 43814.
According to the notice, paragraphs 3.3 (e), 3.8 (d), 3.9.2(e), 4.5, 8.1.4(b) and 8.1.17(a), as well as Annexures A and B of the Legal Aid Manual are amended.
Paragraph 3.3 (e) deals with general processing guidelines; paragraph 3.8 with coordinating and evaluating applications: civil cases; paragraph 3.9.2 (e) with the legal practitioner’s responsibilities; paragraph 4.5 with tariffs payable to Judicare practitioners; paragraph 8.1.4(b) with discretion on increased fees- interim fees and paragraph 8.1.17(a) on payment of benefit due to Legal Aid South Africa.
Annexure A focuses on contribution tables and Annexure B on tariff of fees and disbursements in criminal matters.
The amendments come into effect 60 days after date of publication.
Meanwhile, the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) announced the release of Issue Paper 38 on the Review of Laws Regulating Funeral Parlours and Related Services Industry for public comment.
According to the SALRC, the “investigation seeks to determine the possible development of a comprehensive single statute that regulates the business of funeral parlours, crematoria and the profession of funeral directors and embalmers”.
The Issue Paper aims to announce the investigation, initiate and stimulate debate, seek proposals for reform, and serves as a basis for further deliberation by the Commission.
