The Ad Hoc Committee to Initiate and Introduce Legislation Amending Section 25 of the Constitution will meet this week to finalise arrangements for a planned workshop with various experts.

In a statement, the committee gave the assurance that it is committed to meet the deadline of 31 March 2020 to finalise its work.

According to the committee chairperson, Dr Mathole Motshekga, “everything is on track to meet the deadline. The committee takes it work very seriously and will put in all the hours necessary to ensure the work is done thoroughly.”

In September 2019, the committee announced that it intends holding a workshop with various experts on the question of land expropriation without compensation.

In a statement issued at the time, the committee declared that it “would identify the best brains in South Africa on the process that the committee is going to follow, and the implications of the process in order to amend the Constitution to make it possible for the expropriation of land without compensation”.

At the Friday meeting, the committee also plans to discuss how to continue with its work going forward.
